The School

The only Church of Ireland managed School in the group of parishes and indeed in the Diocese of Clonfert is located in Aughrim, within the grounds of the Rectory. This small school has a tradition of excellent education with a low teacher pupil ratio, however at present numbers are very low and new students are urgently required to ensure a continuation of tradition in this place of learning.

The historic village of Aughrim Co. Galway is the location of the multi-denominational Glebe School for many years. Since 1988 the school has been located in the present location. Secluded private scenic grounds adjacent to the Church of Ireland Holy Trinity Church and beside the grounds of the Rectory.

A new classroom was completed in 2009, under the construction of Vincent Costelloe.

Principal Lisa tells us that the School is a single teacher multi-denominational school with the opportunity for a low teacher/student ratio. There is also a learning support teacher. It is primarily a place of personal development where students pursue their studies and acquire many skills.

The school in Aughrim is 5 km from Ballinasloe town and offers a unique environment for all students where:

  • mutual respect is fostered
  • days are structured
  • rules are clear
  • study skills are developed at an early age
  • preparation for further education is a priority

The Board of Management under the Chairperson is committed to the well-being and progress of the school and meet on various occasions to discuss ideas that will enable the students to be prepared for their future second and third level education. It is thanks to these bodies that the school is well provided for with modern teaching equipment etc for the benefit of all students.

Facilities for children of multi-denominational backgrounds are provided for their pastor or priest to visit.

  • Transport facilities
  • Free education
  • Free annual Medical examination by Paediatrician

This school through planning and preparation in advance will endeavour to:

  • Provide learning experiences for all children
  • Create a good atmosphere of enthusiasm and love of learning.
  • Develop the individual child’s potential
  • Promote good standards of moral and cultural values.
  • Enable all children to read, write, enumerate, communicate effectively.
  • To seek fruitful co-operation between all persons and organisations concerned with the children’s development.

The school day starts at 9.10 a.m. and continues until 2.50 p.m. for all students.

A full curriculum is included in the weekly education programme with additional educational outings where necessary during the year. The children take part in swimming lessons in the leisure centre in Ballinasloe each year. Music plays an important part and children are encouraged to learn musical instruments and are taught singing and drama.
